Smoothie Saturday: 21 September 2013

To mark the last few warm days of the year before Winter is upon us and the end of Smoothie Saturday on the blog until Spring, today’s recipe is the humble watermelon cooler.

I’ve loved having these and with or without alcohol, they’re lovely to have to clear the palette as well as being so light and refreshing.

You’ll need:

Watermelon
Cucumber
Honey
Lime juice
Ice
Mint sprig and cucumber slices (garnish)

Blend the watermelon and pass through a sieve. Repeat the same with the cucumber.

Mix honey and lime juice in a separate bowl and add to the watermelon and cucumber. Top with garnish and ice. You may wish to add vodka or rum to it for a little kick.

Love and light. xx

Greetings and salutations! I hope you enjoyed last week’s rum punch recipe, I certainly had enough of everyone’s in my Mas band last weekend even if you didn’t.

This week I’m full of Carnival Tabanca, so I made a smoothie this week with an influence of the Caribbean. Coconut milk favoured heavily. Hopefully you like it as much as I did.

Coconut milk
Raspberries
Blueberries
Kiwi
Grapes
Chia seeds
Mint
Vitamin powder
(Not in the photo) watermelon and mango

Enjoy your weekend! Love and light. x

Smoothie Saturday: Notting Hill Carnival Weekend!

20130823-235551.jpg

Being of Bajan and Guyanese descent, this is the most anticipated weekend of the year for me as millions descend onto the streets of West London to get on bad for Notting Hill Carnival.

Because of this today’s recipe is not for a smoothie, but for a rum cocktail for you to enjoy over the course of the weekend. Usual services will resume next week.

The rhyme to remember when making a run cocktail is as follows:

One of sour, two of sweet, three of strong and four of weak.

Sour: bitters, lime juice and nutmeg
Sweet: grenadine
Strong: Mount Gay rum
Weak: pineapple juice

Enjoy!!

Smoothie Saturday: 10 August 2013

With all the thicker recipes, I fancied a change last week and made a juice that was weird and wonderful at the same time. I love ginger and my go to juice is the well known carrot and ginger, but with no carrots and no time to go to the shop, I made this from the fridge contents and was pleasantly surprised.

I have made this since with a little soya milk and coyo yoghurt to thicken slightly.

Apple
Celery
Ginger
Cucumber
Lime juice
Spinach
Mint

Good morning!!

I hope your week has gone well, with the variation in the weather this past week here in the UK it has definitely meant ‘four seasons in one day’ has come to fruition.

This week’s post doesn’t have one recipe, but two. The wonderful Elelta who is one of my Run Dem Crew friends Skypes her mum who lives in Canada all the time and as she makes delicious smoothies, it was only right we feature her on the blog.

Smoothie one:
Banana
Avocado
Blueberries

Smoothie two:
Spinach
Cucumber
Celery
Blueberries

I’ve made them both (without banana) and added Coyo, a coconut yoghurt which is dairy free to replace the banana and as a thickening agent, and they were yummy!

A special thanks to Elelta’s super cool Mama, infinite blessings to you.

Love and light xx

A month ago I posted the inclusion of a vitamin, mineral and protein powder to my daily intake. This wasn’t to replace anything I ate, more of an addition to diet and to boost my nutrients. I have to say that I was sceptical on first though, but a month down the line my overall health has improved and with the additions to working out now I’m far away from my operation to get back on the horse, my energy levels have increased somewhat. My hair is groaning at an alarming rate and my skin is glowing. That teamed with my workouts, I’m feeling pretty epic.

So today’s recipe is all about the vitamin shake. I’ve basically added fruit to my shake. If you aren’t interested in the shake, go ahead and make the smoothie minus the powder.

Vitamin powder
Soya milk (I’ve stuck to the 500ml quantity)
Strawberries
Blueberries
Grapes
Spinach

I came across this photo whilst on Facebook a couple of weeks ago and it looked really appetising.

Ricky St Claire, a friend who’s serious about lifting had posted it so I clicked on the post as I knew it would be a nice healthy recipe and I was right!

I have tried the recipe minus the banana (replacing with oats soaked in soya milk overnight) and it is extremely tasty. Ricky’s recipe is below.

“I like to use Alphonso mangos but it’s a case of which ever mango people like, 2 of those, 1 passion fruit, a banana and if you have vanilla pods then great if not a tiny dash of vanilla esscence is cool. Half a cup of ice half a cup of your choice of milk and 2 tablespoons of probiotic yogurt. All in the blender for 2mins to crush the ice and serve.

Alternatives for fresh mango: Sainsburys do frozen mango which is cool. I use that from time to time. I also throw egg whites in if I need a protein hit as well.”

Many thanks to Ricky for sharing this recipe.

(Yes, the colour isn’t appetising, but bear with me!)

Following on from my post a couple of weeks ago about adding vitamin powder to my diet*, I have found that it tastes great in smoothies (of course) so today’s recipe is my favourite combination which includes the powder. I have even gotten mum on board as despite her being awesome with her diet (my good relationship with healthy eating comes from her) she has issue with green drinks or too much textures/funny coloured smoothies.

I made this originally two weeks ago and she loves it so much that I now have to share with her lol.

Strawberries
Grapes
Blueberries
Spinach
Broccoli
Mango and apple juice
Vitamin, mineral and protein powder*

As always, love to hear your comments, let me know what you like/don’t like.
